WHAT IS PARABEN AND WHY YOU SHOULD AVOID IT?

‘Parabens’ is the new buzz words in the beauty industry for the past few years and a number of beauty brands are urging you to avoid it, as a part of their marketing campaigns.

Read on to know why?

1. What are parabens?

Parabens are preservatives ( chemical compounds of para hydroxybenzonic acid ), which are used in beauty products such as soaps, shampoo, conditioners, moisturisers and more to give them a longer shelf life and to kill bacterial growth within the product.

2. Are they harmful to the human body?

Parabens are known to disrupt hormone function within the body. Studies have shown that some parabens replicate hormone oestrogen within the human cells. These oestrogenic activities are associated with breast cancer. In past case studies, parabens have been found present in breast tumours. However, it hasn’t yet been proved that parabens have any link to cancer.

3. Are parabens harmful to the environment?

These chemicals are not just bad for humans, they have a negative impact on the environment as well. Recent research has shown parabens to be found in the bodies of marine mammals. Researchers believe that these chemical have been a part of the products that have been drained into the sewage and released into the environment.

4. How can we identify if a product is parabens free or not?

Identifying the presence of parabens in beauty products is not just about looking at the paraben free mark. Spare a minute or two to read all the ingredients that form a part of the products and look for names such as butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben. These are some of the most commonly used preservatives in cosmetic products.

5. Conclusion

Though it has yet not been proved that parabens are one of the many reasons behind cancer but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Therefore, you should make an educated decision about what you use as a part of your daily skin care routine.
